The Food and Drug Administration initially approved the drug
Trimethoprim in combination with Sulphamethoxazole for instance:
Bactrim and Septra way back during 1973 but the drug was approved as
stand-alone only during the year 1980. Trimpex-Trimethoprim is the
man made synthetic antibiotic or anti-bacterial drug that interferes
with the production of Tetrahydrofolic Acid which is one of the
chemicals necessary in order for bacteria and human cells for
generating proteins. Trimpex-Trimethoprim reduces or slows down
generation of Tetrahydrofolic Acid through reduction or minimizing
the enzyme that is responsible for making Tetrahydrofolic Acid from
the D-hydrofolic Acid.
Trimpex-Trimethoprim diminishes the bacterial enzyme more than the
corresponding human enzymes hence this drug has minimal effect on
the production of Tetrahydrofolic Acid by humans. The drug is found
to be effective against many different bacteria. The recommended
dose preparations are in tablet form of 100mg and 200mg as well as
in solution form of 50mg per 5 mL. The medication is indicated for
use in treating the bacterial infection of urinary tract, traveler’s
diarrhoea, respiratory and middle ear infections and as combination
drug either with Sulphamethoxazole or Dapsone it is used for
preventing and treating the Pneumocystis infections.
The recommended dosage of Trimpex-Trimethoprim is 100mg every 12
hours or 200mg every 24 hours for 10 days. Like all other antibiotic
drugs, the treatment course for this drug too should be completed
even if the symptoms improve earlier during therapy. However,
patients having kidney disease should take lower dosage as their
kidneys may nor remove the drug completely from the body and levels
of this drug may increase thereby leading to cause side effects.
